Research Experience for Teachers - Dole Middle School

Dole Middle School practices teaming, by which a large student group is exposed to a planned curriculum by a team of teachers representing all core subjects. In 2008-09, two teams of 8th graders totaling approximately 300 students studied a multidisciplinary wireless curriculum based on AT&T Wireless World and materials developed by RET teachers in collaboration with engineering faculty and students from the University of Hawaii.

The Dole program is both unique and exemplary due to two overarching advantages enabled by the teaming approach: 1/ All eighth grade students and teachers participate, including special education and ESL classes; 2/ the wireless technology theme is approached from the perspective of each of the four core subjects, encompassing a broad range of concepts, both abstract and concrete, as well as practical applications and real world relevance. At the same time the curriculum addresses academic standards for Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Science, and Technology mandated by NCLB and the Department of Education.

Students have an opportunity to demonstrate their combined knowledge and skill in an end of program exercise where they use technology tools to collect, record, transmit, interpret and document water quality data in the field.
