The publication of Ethnobotany of Pohnpei: Plants, People, and Island Culture will be celebrated with speakers and refreshments. Cosponsored by the College of Natural Science, Department of Botany, Ethnobotany Track, Department of Linguistics, and Lyon Arboretum. The speakers/topics include: Kenneth Rehg/Linguistic Perspectives on Biocultural Diversity; Mike Balick/Ethnobotanical Studies of Pohnpei and David Lorence/Plant Diversity of Pohnpei. A limited quantity of advance copies will be available for purchase.

Ti Workshop at Lyon Arboretum

Hawaiian Cordage - Ka`imi`ike Maile This demonstration features how to gather and prepare hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus). Participants will learn to hilo (spin and braid) the hau to make cordage for lashing. Topics covered include basic botany, horticulture, plant conservation, natural history, Hawaiian ethnobotany and the Arboretum's gardens and collections. After completing the course, participants will be expected to help guide Lyon Arboretum garden tours. Materials and supplies will be provided. Wednesdays 1/7/09 - 2/25/09, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. $100 fee ($75 is refundable after you have guided 6 Lyon Arboretum tours)
