Interested in native plants? Like making a difference? Come join the Sierra Club, Hawaii Service Trip Program, and the City and County of Honolulu establish a demonstration native plant garden at Queen Kapiolani Gardens.

Learn more about native plants from one of Hawaii’s leading authorities, Rick Barboza of Hui Ku Maoli Ola native plant nursery, and enjoy a fun morning with other people interested in environmental service. Contribute to the future enjoyment of Kapiolani Park by visitors and locals alike.

The publication of Ethnobotany of Pohnpei: Plants, People, and Island Culture will be celebrated with speakers and refreshments. Cosponsored by the College of Natural Science, Department of Botany, Ethnobotany Track, Department of Linguistics, and Lyon Arboretum. The speakers/topics include: Kenneth Rehg/Linguistic Perspectives on Biocultural Diversity; Mike Balick/Ethnobotanical Studies of Pohnpei and David Lorence/Plant Diversity of Pohnpei. A limited quantity of advance copies will be available for purchase.

Lecture - Biotechnology: Benefits and Challenges to Hawaii Farmers. Dr. Yun Judy Zhu, Ph.D. In this presentation, both potential benefits and concerns of recent advances in biotechnology as well as the roles of different federal regulatory agencies will be addressed. Dr. Yun Judy Zhu is a Research Scientist at Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) working on tropical crop improvement through molecular cloning and genetic engineering. This event is part of the 2008 Community Forum in Chemistry co-sponsored by ACS-Hawaii Section and WCC.

After completing the course, participants will be expected to help guide Lyon Arboretum garden tours. Materials and supplies will be provided. Wednesdays 1/7/09 - 2/25/09, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. $100 fee ($75 is refundable after you have guided 6 Lyon Arboretum tours)
