Psychologist James Maas, author of the New York Times bestseller, Powersleep, claims that most Americans suffer from a sleep deficit of about 2 hours per night, and adolescents are the most affected. Dr. Maas claims sleep deprived people are not just unproductive, they're dangerous, and the situation is costing the American economy at least $150-billion dollars a year. HPR's Noe Tanigawa spoke with him in advance of a free public lecture later this month.
